그는 1941년 9월 9일 Georgia 주 Dawson 에서 침례교 목사의 아들로 태어났다.
5세때에 같은 주의 Macon 으로 이주하였으며 어린 나이부터 성가대에서 활약하였다.
고교때는 밴드를 조직하기도 했으나 가정을 돕기 위해 고교를 중퇴하고 음악을 시작하였다.
5$의 상금이 주어지는 지방의 쇼에 출연하기도 했으며 연속하여 열다섯번이나 우승을 하자
그가 참가하는 것이 금지되기도 했었다.
이후 1967년, 1968년 전성기를 구가하며 많은 인기를 누렸으며 (이 곡도 1968년도 작품임.)
1960년대를 대표하는 남성 R&B,Soul 가수로서 인정받고 있다.
