Claude King은 Louisiana주 Shreveport에서 1933년 출생하였다.
그는 10대 시절 지방의 여러 행사장에서 노래를 했고,
1958년 Louisiana Hayride 의 라디오 프로그램에 데뷰하기 이전에는
건설 현장에서 일하기도 했다.
그는 전직 디스크자키이고 가수겸 작곡자이던 Merle Kilgore로부터
이 곡을 받아 엄청난 히트를 기록했다.
Merle Kilgore는 이 곡외에도 Johnny Cash의 "Ring of Fire"로도 유명하다.
이 곡은 Arkansas의 실제 지명을 사용하고 실존 인물을 노래로 만들었다고 하는데...
Clifton Clowers의 아름다운 딸을 아내로 맞이하고 싶은 젊은이의 이야기이다.
이 노래는 1962년 여름 많은 인기를 얻어서 country 차트 1위에 올랐다.
이 노래에 대한 answer song으로 (I'm The Girl On) Wolverton Mountain 라는
JoAnn Campbell의 노래가 같은 해에 나오기도 했다.
그는 후에 기타를 연주하며 직접 곡을 쓰기도하면서 1960년대 중반까지 활동하다가
잠시 잊혀졌었지만 Johnny Horton 헌정 앨범에 참여하는등 1970년대와 80년대 초까지
활동을 하였다.
1982년에는 TV 미니시리즈 The Blue and the Gray에 출연하기도 했다.
이 노래는 故 케네디 대통령이 무척 좋아했던 노래로 유명하다.
